its always nice to have the +30 shield handle and -5 20% luck of the draw inscription for the the all purpose shield.

of course if u use a stance or an enchantment all the time, the higher hp handles with those conditions are probably a better choice.

It'ls also nice to have other shields with +10 armor mods for certain elements or a type a creature you plan to fight a lot.

Fortitude is a must. The +30 hp would work in all situations. +45 in stance or +60 while hexed is good for running, but not general. Next is Luck of the Draw. The -5 (20%) would work in all situations. -2 in stance would work also if you're constantly in a stance during battle and also helps when running. -dmg while hexed would most likely only be good for running.

if you only want one shield... +30 and either -2 (or is it 3?) while stanced or +10al against fire/slashing

those -5/20% mods cost a ton for what statistically equals -1 per hit... not very impressive...

Seconding this.

+10vs.fire/whatever else you might be facing > -5/20%

I have a few different shields in PvE play.

+30 Fortitude (I don't deal with the +45 or +60 conditional hp handles)

and either:

+10 vs. Fire (Sleep Now in the Fire inscription)

-20% Blind duration (I Can See Clearly Now inscription)

-2 in Stance (Run for Your Life! inscription)

It's PvE, pick a shield that looks good, put a +30hp (always) mod on and something that's useful for most places, i go with -20% blind simply because i find being blind as a warrior is annoying.

To all you people recommending -5/20%, you realise that that's -1 PHYSICAL damage per hit? Seriously, thats basically useless. Besides, -2/stance and -2/enchanted are twice as effective.

@OP, basically what Tyrael said, though I'm a fan of +45 health/stance. The difference is negligible but I'm always in a stance so it's not like it really matters.

never use +45hp while enchanted / stance and never use a +60 while hexed
imo -2 stance and +30 hp
and get a lion sheild they rock!

^This. Or go with a -20% Blind or +10 AL versus whatever. But I've been running an ES build lately and can't say I dislike it.

+30hp shield handle, and really, the inscription doesn't matter. It's PvE, it's not hard, and having a good inscription isn't going to save you if your team is bad. Although in certain hard mode areas where there's going to be a lot of a certain damage, and the damage is going to be big, having a +10 vs (damage type) shield is never bad.

I have a war that is PvE ONLY as well. I use the h+30 fortitude mod and then I use the armor +10 mods.

Here is a trick since it sounds like you do not have much gold at all. Go to Eye of the North (if you have it) and do the Kill roy's Boxing. Once you do the first round you will be able to do the repeatable quests.

Once at the repeatable quest ( the one were killrooooooy joins you) kill everything and pick everything up. After killing all of the midgets in the circle just map out and do it again. After about an hour of SALVAGING RUNES and sell the drops to the merchant you should have enough gold to purchase some more req9 Armor 16 shields for 1-2K in LA.

At this point in your gaming a perfect eternal shield is not what you are looking for. Just buy some crappy reinforced buckler that is INSCRIBABLE.

Then get the H+30 Fortitude mod and get the armor +10's. There is a bunch of them and you can generally get them for as little as 1K. The -5/20% ones are like 10K or something like that cause people think that they are better than 1/8th Damage reduction. If you take 50 damage you would then take 4 damage less ALL OF THE TIME instead of -5 damage 1/5th of the time. So after 5 hits you would be -5 with the -5/20 and -20 with the specific one. so you are reducing your damage more with the armor +10's.

The problem is that you would need every type of shield and that to know exactly what type of damage that a foe is using against you. This is super easy to figure out if you have the time and are farming. Just take off your armor and let the foe hit you. then equip every type of shield. when you take 4 damage less that's the shield.

As an example I did this with the SNOW WURMS outside of Boreal station. The Snow wurms deal FIRE DAMAGE IN MEELE. I was more surprised than anyone at this. I thought for sure piercing or Cold damage but nope, testing found it to be FIRE.

SO I run with a fire shield when killing them.

Same thing can be done for MIDGETS. Most of the time it is BLUNT damage. so I take a Blunt shield.

So having more than one shield is your answer. Buy 5 crappy armor +16 shields and then buy the armor +10 mods for the INSCRIBABLE shields that you just bought. this should use up 10 of the 20K that you got.

From there buy a Fortitude if you can or a lesser fortitude like h+29 that will cost you 1-2K instead of 10K. People always was the best stuff buy you are on a budget.

So, you should be able to get 5 shields that look like this...

Armor 16 + 10 Vrs Fire Health +29
Armor 16 + 10 vrs Cold Health +29
Armor 16 + 10 vrs Lightning Health +29
Armor 16 +10 Vrs Blunt Health +29
Armor 16 +10 Vrs Piercing Health +29

All for your 20K. It will take you a while but you should be able to do it.

its definitely true the -5/20 is NOT the best way to go for PvE warrior. It's much better for a caster, who will be taking more dmg from physical attacks, but theyre still not as good as the +10sVsType is.
That being said, the -20% condition's duration, blind, cripple, etc, you should have a monk for that, so they really arent usually your best bet either.
If your build runs an enchantment or IAS stance, then the +45 is a good handle. If you're spending more time hexed than not hexed, then the 15 points arent going to make a difference (and fire your monk.)
So, look at your build, and look at your insigs, if youre using the +20armor vs elements insigs already, then go +10vPiercing, and weaken the rangers and sins' attacks against you, and so on. In any case, if your using a balnced team the inscription slot on your shield isnt going to make or break anything, and if youre solo farming then you can mod to best suit the specifc damage, as was said before.

btw, now that you know -5/20's suck, dont tell anybody, cause man I love selling those things

-5/20% is a pitiful mod. I shouldn't have to explain why.

Depending on what you're facing, either -2/Stance or +10AL vs. Fire would be best. You can take a +10AL for every type and have an advantage over -2/Stance if you have the money though. Also, +30HP.

Somehow, I doubt they'll listen anyway.

I always was a fan of -2 / stance, but since the introduction of other mods +10 vs fire and -20% blindness are used most on my shields.

I'd say:
Insc Shield
+30HP
+10 Armor vs Fire
+10 Armor vs Ice
Perfect Salvage Kit OR more than one shield (there are some cheap ones with max stats)
If facing budget problems, I'd say +9 armor/+29HP, wich should be cheap.

It will be easy to pick wich insc you will need for the situation. Eventually you can get more + armor inscriptions as you get more experienced and knows what is better for the region. Prefer reduction to elemental damage over physical damage. Inscriptions like -2 while in stance are lazy friendly, but probably not the optimal choice for general PvE (I could see it working for farming purposes). Anti-blindness insc shouldn't be needed because if you get blinded for the whole duration of the enemy skill, probably there is something wrong with the monks.
